I have 5 chicks that are 2 weeks old, and our power went out 30 minutes ago. I’m utilizing a brooder plate with sand and a grow mat underneath - the sand should be warm for a bit longer.

The house is 67 degrees Fahrenheit and retains heat well (outside is 37 Fahrenheit).

Any idea at what point I should start to worry about them getting too cold?

Thanks!!

Cover the brooder plate with a few thick towels to help retain some heat. Make it like a cave.
Agreed.
If you can't keep the heat, use a hot water bottle, let it sit for a bit so it's not boiling hot, and put it in the brooder.

@Snowy_Idaho, that's great news!

At 2 weeks old, they're at least partially feathered, which is an advantage. 🙂 Thermoregulation is particularly problematic in newly-hatched chicks, so I keep hand warmers in case of emergency brooder heating needs. I also use them when transporting chicks in cold weather - they snuggle right down on the warmer.

That is SUCH a good idea! I’ll pick some up for emergencies.
