Hello fellow newbies. We had meat chickens about 30 years ago, I remember very little about them. Now we are retired and I want to raise chickens just for eggs. I've listened to many YouTube'ers about the do's and don't's of everything from breeds to bedding.
Now I'd like to pick your brains about your favorite breeds for lots of eggs, color isn't #1 for me, but pretty shells are very pleasant.

We moved to northeast Missouri in December, there is a wonderful chicken house here already, complete with two huge wind driven turbines on the roof, roosts and nesting boxes, and quick access to a small run, and a great place for them to forage.
I've met one lady who raises chickens and sells the eggs, she was not very forthcoming in sharing her experience.

Can you share what part of the country you live in and what's your favorite breed of chicken and why ? We won't be able to get them until mid June, but I'd like to be ready by then.
Thanks for sharing your experience !

Hello, Robyn, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'm in upstate New york. It's too hard to pick a favorite breed but I'm partial to Australorp's, Rocks and Leghorns. I like the first two because they're very personable and do well in my climate and I like the last one because they're just very nice eye candy. However the White Leghorns do tend to have a shorter lifespan due to their high production so I don't keep them any longer.

Welcome to BYC! Its really hard to decide on a favorite breed of chicken, but I would recommend black Austrolorps for their sweet personality and fairly good egg production.
There are many fantastic breeds to choose from however, I hope you enjoy the adventure of chickens!

WOW thank you for your quick reply !! Very helpful ☺️ I'm going to start a notebook with all the information ! Of those 3 breeds, can you guess who plays the most eggs ?

Welcome to BYC! It's really hard for me to pick a favorite breed but I'd say Blue Red or Golden Wyandottes, Golden Comets, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, and Austrolarps! Most of these breeds I listed are good layers, have good personalities, and are cold hardy.
Best of luck!
Thank you for your quick reply ! Easter Eggers come highly recommended for the color of their shells for sure 😊
