So I’ve seen these lights that look like a raccoon head with red lights for the eyes. Do these work? Is there any other ideas out there. I’ve got 2 brave raccoons right now. I believe it’s a mama and young one. They’re coming out in the morning and early evening. We have a trap out and about ready to get rid of it permanently.
They seem tame towards us but I’m not taking a chance with the chickens. Any ideas?

Coons are murderous ba#%*ds and are relentless when there is a free chicken dinner every night. Most will agree that trapping and killing is the only solution. Relocating is illegal in most areas. Contact your local game official for more advice. Blinking red lights will get you nowhere.

Lights, decoys, and noise-makers are all temporary solutions at best. Sooner or later the predator usually figures out whatever it is can't really hurt them and they just ignore it.

If your run and coop are predator proof, you don't need to worry about raccoons or any other critter scoping around at night. Once they discover they can't get in, they'll go hunting elsewhere. Use hardware cloth, not chicken wire, and make sure there are no edges that can be pried up or pushed through. Use carabiners on your latches, not barrel bolts, which raccoons can easily open. Be sure windows are secure and any fencing with openings big enough for a raccoon to stick an arm through is covered with hardware cloth. Make sure nothing can dig under the perimeters of your fencing. Do all this and you can sleep soundly at night, confident your chickens are safe.
