Predator People in Miami

Right down the street from where I board my horse, my friend has a large mare that she rescued from a feed lot. She keeps it in her backyard in a large 2 acre pasture that goes up a hill and down to the freeway. Rosie, the mare, never goes down to the freeway, but one night some kids came up over the hill, found Rosie, led her down the hill, cut down the wooden fence and let her free on the freeway. Luckily police found her the next morning, but that really scared me that people have the guts to do something like that

With the economy getting worse we will probably see more of this. Chickens, goats, rabbits & pigs can be butchered quite quickly by anyone who hunts. We are def. going to be keeping an extra eye on our animals. Goats are in high demand to begin with. There is actually a need for meat goats in this country as we are importing more than we supply ourselves.

It's a shame that this happens. But I think that the majority of smaller animals are taken for food. Always wondered why they just don't say they need it and ask. I myself would never turn away someone who was really hurtin'.

You know in the ol' days in Texas stealing a man's horse, or livestock is a hangin' crime. I can't believe some people, how do they live with themselves? Don't they have a conscience?

I had a couple come by last summer, they were mexican and didn't speak any english in front of us using their hands and talking fast. They cased the joint and then the next night... All but 2 of my Buttercups disappeared...

This raised a question in my head, especialy when you said it was in Miami. I googled it up cause I remembered the religion but forgot to spell its name. This could very possibly be the result of the Santeria religion cause they use animal sacrifices in their religion and I read that it is a africian-cuban religon. Goats are highly prized to eat in the muslim and hispanic cultures. Many choose to slaughter their own animals rather than buy in a market. This could cause many people who raise goats concern as many sell their animals for pets, milking only or are concerned that their animals may not be humanely slaughtered. I read a article of a goat rancher that made a good living of selling his animals to the hispanic and muslim cultures, his only requirement is that they had to slaughter the animal on his property. I think it was due to a health regulation issue.

Having spent alot of my growing up years and some of my adulthood living in Miami, that was my first thought when I read this thread. Santeria is very prevelant amongst the haitian people. They will sacrifice chickens as well.

d.k :

We have, as of JanO7, the so-called "threatening manner" defense. MEANING ANYWHERE you are & s/o approaches in what you PERCIEVE TO BE a threatening manner, you may blast away!! 'Course a legal weapon and a witness or two helps.

Yeh, we have that law too...the problem I see with it is abuse. it's this part " if someone approaches in what you PERCIEVE TO BE a threatening manner, you may blast away"
thats going to lead to problems.

Before we had the castle law where if someone tried to attack you IN your home you could blast em. but if you were outside and they came at you in your yard you really didnt have any choice but to try and get inside and then when they followed you could blast em.

also yeh Santaria is pretty popular in some areas of Miami so that could also explain missing goats
you couldnt pay me enough money to live anywhere near Miami

I know that there has also been a rash of people rustling cows in the middle of the night. They round them up into the people's corrals and sort off what they want- usually unbranded calves- and take off with them. Can you imagine the number of people it would take to pull that off effectively?

I used to live in Eastern Washington, Tri-Cities vicinity. When livestock came up missing, you could bet the illegals were having a big party. None went to waste as they ate nose to tail. I need to find out how I can become an illegal. Free medical care, pick and choose what laws I'll abide by...etc.
