Well, we discovered so far a bobcat, two skunks, a rattler, and coyotes making off with out chickens and ducks. Local flocks were either wiped out or nearly decimated by these predators all in the space of a mile. There is also an old stray dog we're going to attempt to trap.

He made off with my smallest roo. What happens to these dogs when surrendered to animal control?

I personally won’t surrender a livestock killing animal. Domestic or wild.

The animal will go to the shelter where the animal control contracts through. If it’s no kill, it will be rehomed. If it’s a kill shelter, it depends on the info given about Fido. If livestock killer is in there, I think they euthanize.

Thank you for the information. I'll notify neighbors and see what is decided.

It is my understanding that they have to hold the dog for 3 days to see if the owner claims it before putting it up for adoption or otherwise disposing of it. I don't know how long they hold them for adoption, a week? I guess it depends on the shelter. If it has a history as a killer of livestock or chickens, all bets may be off. If the owner is found, I would think said owner would be held accountable for said losses of livestock (chickens). But all this is speculation and of course is subject to local laws and ordinances.

What are you doing about the other predators?

My neighbors are taking lethal action. I dont have the heart for it so I call them if I see one of the predators.
.....

As for the shelters, the dog was dumped by his owners. It could be a health or veterinarian issue. It's not uncommon to be honest. Usually, these dogs are picked up by animal control or shot. My hope is he can be found a new home since he didn't ask for this. The county shelter is a no kill. But the senior rescue is more specialized....

I hope this helps. I will call both and see what can be done on Monday again.

Good luck. That poor dog.
