Preparing a chick for a life of showing?

Hello all,

We recently hatched some purebred Delawares and Welsummers. I'm going to show at least one of the Delawares, and probably a Welsummer too. Problem is, they were raised by a broody and are kind of skittish. I know that 3 weeks before a show you're supposed to let them get used to a cage, and wash them directly before, but should I make a point of handling them right now? They are approximately one month old.

Handle it daily. Practice with it inside a pen similar to those found at chicken shows. It will keep them from going into a panic when they are put into those pens.

Getting a young bird used to being handled is a good idea. Do you have cages you can work with them in? Start out slowly, putting them in a cage for just a few minutes at first, then gradually increase the time. Get them used to eating and drinking out of water cups. Get them used to being taken in and out of the cage (always head first!) And it's not a bad idea to get them used to treats, if they associate being in a cage with getting a treat, they won't dread going in there. You can use cut up apples, or even cat treats (mine love kitty treats, and perk up whenever they hear me rattle the can.)

Don't wash the bird directly before the show. Wash it a week to three days before the show and put the bird in a pen with shavings to keep it clean. This way the natural oils are able to regather on the feathers.

I would make sure the birds were show quality before putting that much time and effort into preparing them for show, but if it's all you have, by all means.

Put the birds into a small area where they can see you fairly well. Try a storage box with chick wire on top where they can live and interact with you alot. Give them small treats such as cut up grass, pieces of apple or even a SMALL piece of watermelon. Do NOT make the treats their entire diet.
