Today is Day 45 of my emu egg incubation... I have two of the buggers, and I've been keeping them at 96-97°F(usually around 96.5°F), humidity bounces around 15-30% (but their weights are spot on, I have impressed myself, LOL) and I turn them 4 - 5 times a day (depending on if I'm home or not).
These eggies kind of just fell into my lap, and I will never turn down the opportunity to incubate something. I've done chickens and turkeys (I love my little turkey peeps!). And the more I've read about emu the more I like them. I got to see the parents, too, they were really indifferent towards me, though, haha.
Both eggs have been wiggling since around Day 33 or so. Now they will not stop (well, unless they're sleeping, hehehe). I can't keep a thermometer on them anymore, they just throw it off. I am 90% certain that they're more active at night, do you guys think that's when I can expect them to hatch? I don't know how they would be able to tell if it's day or not in there, hahaha.
I am mostly worried about splayed leg... I looked at Youtube for emu hatches, and they're so wobbly anyways... so my question is, how can you tell if you have a chick who has splayed legs? How long does it take them to figure out those legs of theirs? I built a special hatcher for them and put down this hard, dense carpet (the kind that the fibers are rolled over on themselves so they don't stick up at all) so I hope this help prevents it.
I have unmedicated chicken starter for them, I also plan on getting some greens. Are there any types of veggies/fruits/food they can't have?
What do you feed them as adults? I've heard/read all kinds of things, I'm not sure what to do for them. I'm not sure if I could get ratite feed or not... hmm...
How old should they be when they get vaccinated?
Can emu taste cayenne pepper? I use cayenne pepper to keep away worms on the turkeys, but I haven't seen much on it about emu...
I think that's all I can think of now. I hope they hatch, I have fallen in love with them already!
