I watched the tail end of a chicken show on PBS last night, and it was said that a bantam will pull the feathers off herself to sit on eggs for max heat and moisture. is this true with all breeds? i have rir and i guess it has happened with them i think but just never new why. i thought something was wrong with mine like mites but now i am not sure.

Yes, all chickens do this, to varying degrees.

If your birds have mites or lice, you can see them or their eggs at the base of the feathers near the vent, or on the feather shafts. They are tiny, but visible. Easiest to see at night with a flashlight.

yes, they all do that to provide more warmth to their eggs
