(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I will be getting my "own" chickens for the first time this spring. My family consistently had chickens while I was growing up, but this will be my first time doing it myself.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have no chickens right now, and I plan on having 4-6 chickens. I know everyone says you'll end up with twice as many- but with only my husband and I and being very busy with other things as well I feel very confident that 4-6 chickens will be my max.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm planning on going pretty classic, I'd ideally like to have 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Barred Rock, and 2 Laced Wyandotte chickens.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I googled "chicken forum" and it was the first result! Currently I'm looking for some feedback on my coop plans and figured the forums will be helpful for that research.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm a competitive equestrian, I teach riding lessons and train horses part time, and recently bought enough property where I can have a few horses (and chickens!) at home.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a high school math teacher, I have two mutt dogs that are the best dogs ever, and currently I spend all of my free time working on fixing up our farmette to prepare it for livestock!

So cool, glad you decided to join.:) I am sure you will find BYC helpful. Good luck with the chickens, have you considered getting a turkey, or some guinea fowl?
Thank you! I would love love love some ducks, and we have a pond, but I need to do a lot more research about how to keep them from becoming coyote food! I'm definitely just starting with basic chickens and then well see how far i fall down the rabbit hole ;)

That sounds like a lot of fun! And starting with chickens is a great choice. :) I started with chickens, then got some guineas, and earlier this year I rescued a very sick turkey chick, who grew up to be my pet turkey Mr.Turkey. You said that you do horses what type of riding do you teach and do?
