So i am in WI. We have weather dipping into the negatives and up into the near 40's, off and on, every few days.
So.. how can I preserve eggs for hatching until I can get them into an incubator.
I live in town, my chickens are boarded along with my horses. There is a teacher in Milwaukee who wants hatching eggs for educational purposes.
She doesn't want the chicks, I would get them back..
But transporting them and keeping the eggs warm until I can get them 90 miles away?
OR if I get them to another BYC'r to hatch out for me?

Just want to know the right thing to do?

Thanks
Carol

shipping eggs in this weather is tough. if they freeze it can kill them. but if you heat them they will start to develop before they are in the incubator -- that is bad too!

i dont know if there is anything you can really do other than taking the chance that they will freeze

I am talking road trip, but my winter coop isn't heated. That is what I am afraid of, besides grabbing fresh from the chicken how can I help ensure they stay above freezing?

Okay Carol, I may be a bit confused....

Ask whomever that boards your horses, to collect your eggs 3 or 4 times a day....especially early morning when most would lay. S/he then would put them in a place that is roughly 55 degrees or so and rotate them for you if she's willing. If not, buy or borrow an egg turner for her to put them into. Tell her any frozen or cracked eggs, dispose of. I bet whoever tends your chickens would be willing to do this - at least to collect and rotate as often as s/he possibly could.

You do not want that egg freezing but there are studies that say egg travel better and actually hatch better in cooler weather rather than warmer weather.

If I'm not clear, please pm me. Best of luck, Nancy
