While going through the pictures today, I saw that one of my "failures" was one of my better pics. Greta was playing with a toy and I was trying to get a picture of it and she just dropped to a boring just standing there pose under the toy. Oh, well. But when I got these pictures on my computer, I saw that this was one of the first pictures that actually caught her color. When we ordered our ducklings, we knew that we wanted them to be pets and egg providers. We purposely ordered only one of each breed so we would be able to tell them apart very easily from the time they arrived through the brooder and into maturity. Greta is our Black Swedish - she is a girl and has the full quack to prove it. In most of the pictures I have seen, they are very pretty, but they are black and white. Greta has a pretty small white patch, and she out Cayugas our Cayuga with the green / purple / blue iridescent highlights. But because she is so dark and my camera is a cell phone, this almost never shows at all unless she is getting so much light that she washes out in a light gray color. Now maybe this happens to everyone else too, but I have seen many pictures of Cayugas that catch all the iridescents beautifully so I think that Black Swedish are supposed to be just black. I have slightly touched the contrast/brightness/saturation on this photo, but not to enhance the bird, just to make up for the camera's shortcomings and I am pretty satisfied that this is actually an accurate representation of what Greta looks like when you see her in person.
