Prevent 55 gallon water tank from going stagnant

Well, for storing water for emergency use we add bleach to it, I'd think to do the same. I can't recall how much right off (been a long time since I rotated water barrels, apparently!) but a quick google search on storing water will give you specifics.

I am curious to see what responses you get, I too am having issues with my water getting kind of nasty. I use the same set up, 55 gal drum with pvc pipe and nipple waterers.

Don't overfill it.

Use a small aerator / bubbler to get water to turn over. Does not need to be continous. Does a couple things. Ensures plenty of oxygen present but also makes so attached orgamism can filter out nasty organics.

Are you looking for a way to keep it full or keep the water in the barrel fresh?

If you are trying to keep it fresh, keep it cool and in the shade if you can. Could also add a little apple cider vinegar or Oxine to the water to retard the growth of the yucky stuff.
How much avg per gallon?

Keep it out of the sun... treat it with a capful of bleach (same as city water, chlorine)
