Fungus likes warm wet spots. Sweaty feet stuck in shoes for long periods are prime growing conditions.
Use a wicking quick-drying type sock, either Coolmax type stuff or a wool blend, and change your socks often. Don't wear shoes when you don't have to. If you're home lounging on the couch, take off the shoes and either go barefoot or change into dry socks. Let them tootsies get some fresh air!!
I was a swimmer in high school and no I did not wear shower shoes or anything like that at the gym locker room, but I wore flip flops year-round so my toes were never encased in sweaty socks/shoes to give any fungus a chance to grow.
