Hay all,
I could really use some ideas, ways, to prevent bumblefoot. right now I have a very muddy chicken run. two of my 9 chickens have gotten Bumblefoot this past year.

What are the BEST ways to prevent Bumblefoot.

Thank you all

I don't really believe there is a way to prevent bumblefoot. Some folks say to make sure you keep sharp objects (stones, thorns, etc.) out of their run to prevent them from being injured, but I don't think that really has any impact. If it did I would have bumblefoot all the time because I live in rough and tough terrain, but I have never had a single case of it in any of my chickens. My birds have an often muddy run due to some drainage issues, but that has not proven to be a problem for them either.

I think you are just having bad luck. Bumblefoot can also be passed from bird to bird like any other staph infection which is why it is important to keep ailing birds separated from the rest of the flock until they are well again. But between the bad luck and resilient germs, you are seeing more bumblefoot than is usual.

Good luck.
