hello, new here and thought id give this a try. i have a few questions.

soooo i had a RIR last fall that was wheezing and sneezing, we separated her and fed her garlic etc. she was separated for a few weeks and was better. rest of the girls were fine.

also found that she had a partial prolapsed vent, it wasnt completely hanging out but very noticeable. gave her warm bath and she was fine for a while.

she is completely fine now, still eats and drinks, still lays but since last yr she is the only one with a bare bottom... i know the girls pick on each other but its bare bare, also ive treated the coop with DE and clean to prevent bugs, the other girls are fully feathered.

(shes also a survivor of a savage fox attack, poor baby)

will she always have an re occuring prolapsed vent??
any ideas why she has a bare bottom still??
any suggestions would be appreciated !!

Can you show pictures of the bare bottom? She may be self plucking or it may be bugs. DE is not very effective and can often cause more harm than good both to you and the chickens who breathe it in. I would recommend not dusting the coop with it anymore, every time they stir it up and breath it in it is damaging their lungs. If you think she has lice, check under her wings and around her vent, you will be able to see them pretty easily if she has them.

Sometimes chickens also self pluck that area if they are hot or just because they are overzealous about cleaning that area. They can also pluck that area if it is causing them pain. If the bare butt showed up around the time of the prolapsed vent, that could be the reason. Now that it is gone, perhaps it will grow back in.

Once a chicken has had a prolapsed vent they are more susceptible to it in the future. Most common causes are larger-than-normal eggs and overeating. Make sure not to give her too many treats.

Not a med but it's actually called feather fixer...
