No, it's for the funky look, not for hawk bait.

I don't think having a crest makes them more noticeable to hawks, but they might be the last to notice hawks as quickly.

That's just as bad as a site that I came across recently that hates on LF Silkies saying they aren't real Silkies, cuz they aren't Bantams, or whatever.

They also claim bantam Silkies were the originals, which is actually the opposite. Large Fowl Silkies were actually bantamized(Downsized by crossing with bantam breeds) when they entered the UK, & US.

I agree with your assumption. They have too much head fluff that they cannot see a hawk coming at them.

That's why it's important to trim the feathers in front of their eyes.
