Price of Broiler feed....

The key for me is getting it ground at the mill. TSC is outrageous. I still by my layer feed and dog food there, but for my broilers, I get it ground at the mill. For 500lbs of 22%, I'm paying around $100. Not to mention, you can actually see pieces of corn, soy, etc in the feed, and most important, I didn't lose a single bird this season (out of 53,) whereas in the past, I've lost several in each batch. I can't say for sure that it was the feed, but that's the only change I made.

My 53 birds ate 1000lbs of feed in 8 weeks. That seems high to me, considering they only have food in front of them for about 10 hours per day. Does anyone have thoughts on that?

$20 a bag here for certified organic from our local mill. However, they're growing like mad on it so I've been cutting it with 1/3 long bearded oats, which were grown on our farm so were basically free.

*sigh*
I'm paying $14 for the TSC gamebird chick starter that I feed my broilers and 12.99 for 50lbs of layer crumbles...
It's so high my hsuband is pressuring me to stop raising the meaties...
Right now, a 50lb bag of grain is lasting my layers, ducks, turkey, and geese about 4 days.

I have no idea if we have a feed mill in RI or how to find one...

Milled feed is so much cheaper than if you buy it from TSC... or other mills that just sells feed but doesn't actually mill it.

Look for places in the phone book or on line. I'm sure you will find something. It saves me about $5-8 / bag depending on what I buy....

I guess the $9.80 isn't too bad. I did forget to mention that it contains alfa-meal as well. The fish meal is substituted for the animal fat... this way I know which animal is being used for the protein, not to mention the chickens go crazy over it.

Here is the actual recipe that I made up:

940 lbs Corn
700 lbs roasted Soy beans
100 lbs oats
100 lbs Alfa-Meal
75 lbs fish meal
60 lbs nutri balancer
60 lbs of other various vitamins and minerals.

Cost is 392.00 / ton. (gets me through two hundred broilers from 1 day till 6 weeks)

Here in Ohio I pay
Layer/ Breeder 16% pro. pellet $10.00 a 50 lb bag
Stater 20% pro crumble $ 20.00 a 50 lb bag
Big 4 pellet 20% 18.00 a 50 lb bag
broiler 30% pro crumble $ 22.00 a 50 lb bag

I have been shocked at the prices of "broiler" feed--24% at a cost of $21 for a 50lb bag. I fed this for five weeks and it was costing too much. They free range so I have been cutting their broiler starter with soy meal at a ratio of 2/1 with more starter than soy meal. It really makes a difference. My birds seem to not notice the difference and I have had no sick birds or any funny droppings.
