price per lbs. and need help finding a processor in Michigan

Hey all I am new to the Meat bird side of things. I would like to raise my birds and sell them but cannot find a way to figure out a price per pound for them.

I also need to find a poultry processor in Michigan the one in the Lansing, MI area closed up shop. I would like a USDA or MDA approved Facility. Any suggestions?????

For your second question, do you have a mirror? Otherwise you are looking at giving away a large portion of your profit over to someone else.

I've been looking for a processor in MI too. It's been tricky. Destiny Farm in Brighton uses Boyer's in Canton, I think. I also found this one online http://www.smithmeatsinc.com/ There have been ads on craigslist for a processor in corunna I think. It's down for maintainence so I can't find the listing right now but will add it when the site is back up again. I don't have any chickens yet but would like to find a processor before I get any meat chickens. I can raise them and eat them but I'm not ready to dispatch them. I read on another thread that we should ask our local farm stores. I will do that next time I'm at tsc.

If folks aren't selling them, I'd be happy to help you out with processing your own, I'm smack between Lansing and Flint, a couple miles of I-69.

As for actual processors - I'm thinking there is two in Webberville, I'm not sure if Troy Hull does chickens (I've had pigs taken to him). Baines is closed, which sucks, they were the best. You may want to call either Webberville or Dansville schools, or any other school that has a large FFA group that raises broilers and see where they go - when I was in school it was Baines, but obviously it's changed now to someplace else.

I actually live in webberville.
I am pretty sure troy does not do poultry. I can check into that
though.

I tried calling the guy in Corunna but he hasn't called back yet.

pound for broilers.

As for the price per lb it doesn't really matter what the going rate is until you figure up your costs. Find out what it cost you to raise them -- including labor, electricity, water, feed, bedding, depreciation cost of facilities and equipment, etc -- and THEN worry about going price.

Honestly, the fact that you're on here asking for an MDA approved facility tells me you've got a LOT of research you still need to be doing before you even THINK about raising meat birds for sale.

If I were you, I'd go to the feed store in town (not ADM out on 52, but the actual Webberville Feed and Grain) and see if you can catch Mr. Wheeler around there. I can't remember who is running the FFA at school now, but you could ask 1) Where they take their chickens, and 2) What price they ask for them. Mr. Wheeler could also probably provide you with a lot of information as well to help, or direct you to the FFA leader as well.
