I went to look at the chickens tonight with a flashlight like I do about once a week ... it is the only way most of them will let me check for mites etc. as they roost above head level....
tonight on some of my white hens I saw what appeared to be moving splinters on their tailfeathers... they were exactly splintery looking and moved sideways... not forward or backwards....they were NOT oval like a human head lice.
No other symptoms at all...everyone seems healthy.
They free range from about 9 am -10 pm when I shut the coop up for the night.
The only other animals near them ( besides wildlife, which is sparse bc we have four dogs ... are the dogs)
I just got a caged flock about a week ago- some of the smaller chicks have escaped their cages and mingled in the yard with the others... i really wanted to keep them appart but we couldnt get them all put up as they are pretty wild.
I released fly predators in the coop about a month ago- they look a bit like the predators did when they first hatched- is it possible its a 2nd generation of them?
