Probably shouldn't have, but I had to try it with my silkies....

I gave twelve 3 week old babies to a silkie hen and she took them

And not only she, but her best silkie henny friend AND my silkie roo!

One big happy family.

And here's the kicker, none of my silkies are even laying yet. My girls are only about 4 months old and roo is about 5 mos. They hovered around my brooder for days and I started letting them out together after a week or so, supervised, for a few mintues a day. I decided to put them with the most interested pullet one night and I was up before the sun to see how she reacted in the morning. To my delight she took them right under her wings (not literally, haha

it's 100 degrees here!) and has been such a good mommy. My other girl was jealous and has been participating in the baby raising, too. My roo thinks he's a proud papa and has been showing the babies the ropes of hopping up on the cinderblocks in the run and hiding with them in the cannas when the lawnmower is going

My 2 pullets, my roo, and all 12 babies (now 6 weeks old--8 silkies, 2 sultans, and 2 showgirls) have lived together in my silkie pen for 3 weeks now and are the cutest things ever.
I fed noodle scraps from supper this evening and my sweet roo stood beside the babies while they ate without a single squabble, I just love him! I never imagined it would work, there's just not much sweeter than a silkie!

Now I've got lavender silkie chcicks from Ideal arriving on Thursday and I just can't decide what to do with them

Same story here! I had to re-home my Silkie roo, so I got my girl (4 months of age) a Barred Rock chick to raise, and she did literally take her under wing... has been showing her how to scratch and everything! I love, love, love my Pei Pei!

I'm so glad to hear you have the same experience going on with your Silkies!
Thank you for posting this!

I swear, those silkies....now I want like 400 of them

My pullets and roo are just SO SO SO SWEET! They meet me at the gate and all cram in my lap and will sit with me for hours and even fall asleep on my lap. My roo likes to follow me in through my laundry room door and hang out in the kitchen sometimes

They just took those babies right in with them, never a single peck or thought of aggressiveness was displayed.

They are so sweet and gentle and nurturing......and sooo pretty, too!
