I have a question regarding the use the probiotics for new hatchlings. I've read where some people have added probiotics to food and/or water to help keep chicks healthy, and was wondering if anyone here uses them regularly in place of yogurt or cottage cheese for their chicks that show signs of runny droppings, unwellness, or just as a general preventative. I purchased some PB-8, which has eight different strains of "good" bacteria. For the first two days after hatching, I gave this to my button quail to help with a pasty stool, and it seemed to get rid of the problem. Anyone else have any thoughts or experience using this or similar? Should I continue to give it daily as a preventative, or has anyone run into any problems with continual use?

I mixed yogurt with live cultures into a mash ( crumbles warm water and yogurt) to rid pasty butt. It worked great! They love it so much I continue( at 4 weeks) to give it to them a few times a week.

I get attacked when I bring in the yogurt mash!! They all have very healthy poops! I also put organic apple cider vinegar into the water 1 T per gal. So far so very good!

I am a huge fan of probiotics for all ages of poultry, especially those little ones. Gets them off to a good start. 70% of the immune system is in the GI tract and it has been proven world wide that probiotics given to poultry and nearly prevent enteritis's.

I get these from Amazon...

The 240 gram will go a long way if you are only dosing a handful of birds on and off. Great stuff!

Yes, I agree 110%! I give my chicks probiotics and/or yogurt as they get older and throughout their lifetimes.

hi everyone, i am pro probiotic, i recently purchased my little flock and along with the the other supplies i included probiotics. i don't have a lot of experience with chickens per say but have plenty with animals in general and adding good bacteria to the digestive system keeps them happy and healty. i have had my little guys a week tomorrow and they all poop, eat and drink like champs. their feathers are coming and they are beautiful. i worked for a vet for two years. if there is one thing i learned it is healthy animals drink and eat. when they don't drink and eat that's a problem. if those two things are off then the poop is off. if the digestive system is working properly then the poop is healthy not to loose not too dry and falls away from the body. as i said i am not an expert on chickens the only ones i have had in the past the mamma hen took care of and i took care of her. she had three clutches of ten at a time and they all hatched and thrived. sadly i had to give her and my wonderful rooster up years ago due to a move. good luck to all <3
