Problem: hens roosting in egg box. (pics) Solutions, anyone?

Some very good ideas. I like fargosmom's idea of converting part of the shelf into the nest box. Now the trick would be to get them a higher spot on which to roost. How low of a ceiling can they work with? How much higher than the nest box does the new platform have to be before they'll choose it? That's the onlt hard part of the plan: the shelf is already the highest thing in there, and anything higher risks a too-low ceiling.

I think that my little hen house is very similar to yours. They roost on top of the nest box/shelf. The difference is really just one more shelf made about a foot down from the top shelf with a divider that makes an actual box (of course doors have to be closed for darkness - they walk in via little chicken door lower left side). So 2 shelves = 1 roost place and 1 nest box. It works good for me, I scrape the poo off the top shelf every morning and toss in the compost. Of course if you added the 2nd shelf to yours, you'd be giving up that cool upper outward swinging door thingy.... but I dont know that you just have to have those, I reach in from the front obviously..... just my 2cents
