Im new to all the chicken raising stuff but I am having trouble with one of my baby chicks. We got our shipment in 2 days ago and they were fine. This one started gulping like its choking last night and is still doing it today. It can bearly stand up but is still chirping and will drink but wont eat. I was just wondering if there is anything I can do for the poor little thing. Im not sure what's going on and no one else seems to have a clue either to help me out!

By no means am I an expert, but I would massage it's little crop very gently, maybe got a large piece of food lodged in there. I'd be trying that while waiting for someone who really knows what to do posts!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I grind up their food in a coffee bean grinder so it's very small but not powder. It seems to be easier for those really little ones to eat.

Good luck!

I do the same thing with newely hatched chicks, some may have trouble eating the bigger crumbs especially guinea keets.

try a mixture of poly-visol and sugar water.Take a tea spoon full and just hold it up to the chicks beek, letting the beak rest in the mixture,it should take in some fluids this wat,i would do this every 30 minutes to and hour till it,s bak to normal, mine usuall respond to this treatment within 8 hours.
Good luck with the little one.

Im worried its not going to make it its not doing very well. I just want to be sure I am doing all I can to give it a chance. I got them as a birthday present and even though I have only had them a short amount of time I have gotten very attatched.

I am the WORST Mother Hen...I hover over and look in on them all the time...I have just had them 9 days... only one chick seems to not be flourishing... it eats...it sleeps...but it is not aggressive and it seems to let all the other chicks grab it's food...if I isolate it..it cries and it is the only one that wont eat from my hand out of 14 chicks, Production Reds....Isabella is half the size of all the others... is there something I am missing?

I'm using the Chick Starter too, but found that some of those 1 day old chicks ate better when it was finer.
