I am new to roos but have some older hens as well...2.5. My roo (I have two, but only one that has come into his own so far) is just getting his spurs and feeling rather 'randy' lately...I have watched him quite a bit and with most hens, he does his business and leaves them alone. I just caught him flat out attacking one of my older girls. He seemed to be eating her comb! Yes, part of the back part is missing. She is a bloody icky mess. I hit him with my shoe but we all know what that will do..nothing. I separated her out and will doctor her up. What can I do to prevent this?? She seems to be the only one he is doing that with. I don't want to get rid of my roo though.

Thank you so much

Young cockerels can be such a pain. She may have spurned his advances, and older hens are know to try to kick a young rooster's hiney to put them in their place. I would take this guy out with the other guy to a bachelor pen for awhile to let him cool his jets and mature a bit more. There are tons of extra roosters out there this time of year for free. No one needs to put up with a rough guy. After she heals and gets some BluKote on her comb, you could try him again, but any repeat offense and he would be gone at my house.

Get rid of the offending rooster. He instinctively knows your older hen is losing her fertility due to her age. He will eventually kill your hen, then possibly start on the other older hens. I've dealt with this before. Your hen will be ok once you doctor her up, but will be rooster-shy in the future.

Young roosters are often like this. Many times, they just need to mature and become less "cocky". I would separate the offending rooster for a few weeks, and then introduce him again. Hopefully he will have quieted down. If not, you may have to consider getting rid of him, as a mean rooster is not a good rooster.
