Processing Day Support Group ~ HELP us through the Emotions PLEASE!

Not a fan. Consistently the highest rating in kills, for the reason of temperament and poor lay, in my flocks.

I've always wanted some.. they seem like such good broody birds.

Now you got me wondering. Ofcourse, I always get a only 2-4 of whatever I want to try. Just sell or eat if I don't like it by the time it's a year old. I'm very anti-feathered feet and not much of a fan of little yappy dogs, I mean, little flooffy birds.. so silkies.. cochins.. not gonna happen. What is your broody of choice?

I learned I really do not like 'production reds' or whatever these sorry things are supposed to be. They're... sassy... seems like they nag at you if things don't go their way. Still on the fence on my partridge rocks, I don't love 'em, don't hate 'em.. but don't love 'em. Just gotta try things to see if you like 'em. Love my white rocks, so I got some more this year, along with some barred rocks.

I've never had a breed that I considered a "good" broody...my WR was a great mother, but not a great broody. Cochins are very pretty and they say they are great at it, but not great at foraging and free range survival, so that doesn't fit into my flock needs. Game hens are supposed to be good at it, but how many eggs can they cover? Can't stand BOs, so they aren't on my good list either. To date, the best broody I've had was a BA, but they aren't known for the trait.

Muscovy ducks...that's my conclusion.

Can't do it, will most likely never do it. I have nightmares about movies i saw when i was 13. I would have to have someone else cull, and then i couldn't eat it. Big Baby Me!

It's ok. Many of us have been in your place.

At least you are thinking about it. That is a first step.

You forgot about your FAVORITE breed, Silkies.

I've heard kraienkoppe are similar to game hens in broody ability and traits, but I like fat docile chickens...

Flighty is not my cup of tea (it's my issue with my partridge rocks, they're trouble to catch).

Oh...yeah...silkies.....YAY.

Glad to see there are more people on the 'I actually don't care much for silkies' bandwagon. They remind me of stuff-in-your-purse dogs... froo froo things.

I am on a kind of bandwagon too. I was given some hatching eggs and Silkie and Show Girls were in there. I kept them until they were about 3 months old and they had to go!

I'm none too fond of special needs chickens that cannot act, perform or be like actual chickens.....I agree..they remind me of little dogs in purses. Somehow or another I came into the possession of a LF Cochin cockerel through no plans of my own(got him in a pen of free DP/layer breed roosters this winter for processing and canning but he was too skinny to kill) and though he is doing okay right now and is slowly, slowly learning how to forage with the rest of the flock, he is not a good flock keeper when it comes to free ranging. Not wary, not fast, doesn't call the alarm, etc. He wasn't too fond of snow and walked on it like he was prancing on hot coals.....

I'll keep him around until I can get a WR rooster to replace him with but for now he's just a pretty boy in leg warmers...sweet bird but not anything I'd intentionally get for a working flock.

I tell people that if I had silkies I would have to have a doll house coop with pink curtains!

My chickens have to work too.

Some where in Middle east or Asia there is a LF Silkie Meat Breed! That might be ok to have.

Working chickens. I like that thought. I'm getting to the point in life that whatever enters our home for any period of time, must do some sort of work to earn it's/their keep. However, we have a 15 year old free loading cat but she was here before my attitude adjustment. She is grand"mothered" in.
