Processing Day Support Group ~ HELP us through the Emotions PLEASE!

Many was the time, when I was a kid, that I looked at my grandmother (she was born in 1888... my mom was a very late baby...) and I thought "Yeah.... That's not going to work these days"
And many's the time, as an adult, with my grandmother long gone, I think "Well, once again, she was right!"

It's SO true... My Gma was straight off the boat (Italy) all these old time methods of animal "husbandry" that I laughed at, once I tried it, and researched, people actually do, I find myself giving out advice to the feed store owners lol...

I finally made a bigger waterer for our 26 meaties! and I was surprised, with a dremel it only took me 15 minutes, and I procrastinated over a week to make one! DOH

They are really getting stinky I had to lime and then add more shavings... rain rain rain is driving me insane! I need it to dry out now please!!!

Sally, the waterer looks really neat, can you provide a bit more info about how you put it together or provide a link if the instructions are on byc?

I seen a picture in google images is all then winged it, but a friend who just started raising chickens asked me to document how I do it so she can make one.
It only took 15 minutes with the dremel.

estimate 4" apart, but the last one I drilled I had to just eye it center. IT is just a chicken waterer lol

Coffee container with two holes in it .. EDIT TO ADD, at 2" from bottom, and 3/4" drill paddle bit

thats it!

I will add, what was neat is that the writing/colors on the coffee container made the boogers go to town pecking and finding it holds water immediately!

Has anyone following the thread made a plucker yet? My hubs is thinking about making one with an extra DE pool filter pump motor I think its 1hp. When I looked up the pulley system it shows a 15" or 16" V belt pulley, these are expensive to buy new. Anyone have any idea of where to find one that big used?

do these look of normal size for cornish x for 9 weeks old? they are still running and jumping up on things although I see them tiring out some now. I just thought with all the reading that they would have issues, and so far they seem sturdy and smaller than I would have thought. and btw they have food pellets available during daylight hours all the time because I saw no reason to keep it away from them, they are extremely active birds! although not free ranging they do have a nice big run and we throw cracked corn around and feed on occasion, some mulched grass clipping and household scraps.

Hello Sally!

Is it possible you received all pullets? I see a lot of light pink combs in there and I don't see any dark red combs. An 9 week old pullets CX should be about 8lbs. A cockerel would be about 10lbs. IF all went well. They can be active if you have the space and depending on the genetics you happen to end up with. Some batches are better than others. They look a little on the lean side, but that could be normal if they are all pullets. Have you weighed any of them?

I wasnt sure what weight they should be alive

I was going out with the scale and set it back down

there are ALOT of females and I think maybe 9 males

males seem a bit taller as they should

I will weigh them if I get a chance tomorrow, and check back in. thanks much!

You bet!

You can wait longer to process if they are under weight, but you risk heart attacks of course. What % protein are you feeding?
