Processing Day Support Group ~ HELP us through the Emotions PLEASE!

Pics
I don't have this issue...I hold the chicken and my husband either axes it's head off or we cut their neck...just depends on how we're feeling that day. My first time I couldn't figure out how to get the insides out...so we just cut all the meat off the bones...I can't seem to get trimming it quite right...So we end up with mangled chicken pieces...I have a friend that is supposed to come over and show us how to make them look like grocery store chickens soon as we have 9 meaties to process. I don't mind the killing or cleaning...It is 1/3 the reason we have chickens...
1/3 is to eat them...
1/3 is for eggs...
and the last third is because I like watching them wander about the property eating bugs and what not.

I had all that in my mind before we brought the first chickens home...The first chickens we killed was one of the first we got. She was an old hen that was supposed to be laying, but never did.

We have had to cull a couple since then, but since they were having issues I didn't want to eat those ones...I am pretty excited about eating the meaties though. They look tasty now and are 6 weeks old at least..we got them six weeks ago today.
We are also getting turkeys soon and have at least 3 cockerels we will have to process before too long. I wouldn't mind keeping one Buff Orpington rooster, but then I would have to process one of the other roosters we already have. Ehh who knows.
Either way it isn't that bad...
I like the chickens...I like their antics, but if I am playing with them it is in bad taste as they are soon to be my food. I am not quick to form attachments to people or animals though. I have owned numerous dogs, but only loved 3...Haven't ever felt attached to a cat... Doesn't mean I wish them harm, but if they got out and didn't come home one day, oh well.
You just have to set out knowing that killing and eating said animal is part of the plan.

I see a lot of images with people wearing Rain COATS!!
is it really this bloody? or are they the chopping heads flopping birds processors?

see if I got all the methods here......

Killing Method in processing
  • Chopping block/sharp ax
  • Wringing the neck/ stretching
  • Hanging chicken
  • A killing cone neck artery slice
  • Pithing aka Braining
  • Hypnotism to be used along with any other method (this still cracks me up)
  • Shooting 22 cal nix the shooting..... not safe too close range

I would so have this problem! Luckily we will be keeping our meat birds at a neighbours house to prevent me getting attached. My husband will also be doing the killing. Not me!

I've never had to wear a raincoat. Using the killing cone, there is very little blood that gets on you (well, on my DH. Because I don't do the killing. But I've watched, and I wash the clothes around here). When I pluck, I wear old clothes, obvs, but just get feathers everywhere, no blood.

it sounds like some people don't isolate the birds before processing day. should I isolate or not? I have my rooster bachelor pads that I was going to isolate them in for a couple days and then set up processing around the corner from them. Also I don't have a sink that I could dedicate to cleaning. (I have OCD issues and it involves sanitized kitchens) So could we just use buckets. I have several buckets in mind for the various cleaning stages. Then a quick sanitize and refill for each bird. I would not want to do this with lots of birds.
