turkey deep fryer. I think you can get the whole set up for $50. At least that is what I am planning and going to pick it up tomorrow.
I think we got ours as a fish fryer, but it is the same thing, just comes with different pots...the fish fry pot wouldn't work for chicken scalding, but it is awesome for the chips...since you get the collander basket thing with it...

Anyway a turkey deep fryer is the same thing...
It is basically a metal stand with propane workings inside of it...

You hook up a tank of propane and Voila! Fire... in a nice easy to use free standing, well metal stand... I like it because you can move it wherever you need to use it. We process ours behind our house, that way the neighbors don't have to watch...although they have chickens, goats and cows so they are used to it...I never see them killing cows in view of my house, so we won't kill chickens in view of theirs...
Anyway...
Huge stock pot, and portable propane deep fryer.

and I bet if you googled propane fryer thing that it would come up...
I have googled worse and figured out what I was trying to think of...Lol.

I hope so too!
Sally If I was close to you I would absolutely come help you or do it for you

Quote: That is so kind! I would love to have the company too! I have cleaned many animals so I certainly can deal with the part AFTER the plucking, its up to that point I am worried about. I have RA and I am not sure I can be much help plucking by hand, cutting here and there would be ok but not sure about constant plucking. I guess I can take pain meds as I work, put the younger batch of kids to work.

I asked my older son if he could come home and help, he said I don't think so. Why did I give birth to him again??????

I think I would sooner just slit the throat and pray he forgives me for not stunning him first LOL
I agree... not my cup of tea but is an alternative and at least worth knowing how to do. It doesn't need to be a hard hit to stun them.
I think I'd be so worried about not hitting him exactly right and causing pain and fear and trauma. Better, in my opinion, to make a quick swipe across the trachea and let him bleed out. Bleeding out (according to people that have cut arteries and almost died) feels just like floating off to sleep.
Yep, still my method of choice. Especially when I hold them upside down for a few minutes before going in the cone anyway, the 'head rush' they get basically has them nearly unconscious before anything even happens anyway.
You are correct in your assumptions and it may happen this weekend, I don't have a big pot/boiler...

Any suggestions on pots and way to heat them outside?

I don't think I trust the kids around boiling water and a fire with this going down all at once. And I don't have anyone that can "watch" my kiddos either.
I'd try to find a black canner type pot at a thift store somewhere. And if you have a gas grill you could take the lid off of it, and place the pot directly on the grill. The water doesn't need to actually boil to loosen the feathers.... temp of around 155-160 should work fine. A grill should be able to do that, it just takes a while.
Wouldn't hitting the bird in the head with a hammer kill it anyway?
It could, if you hit it very hard... A moderate crack shouldn't kill it.
of course the cheap one on walmart site is out of stock!
Murphy's law... try KMart too.

I guess I could take the lid off the camp stove but I don't have a big pot either my pot pie pot is big but not enough for a LF brahma, the prizes of those pots are 50 bucks alone! holy moly!
