I'm definitely not a hard-core chicken owner, but the thought of having an indoor chicken turns my stomach, to each his/her own. I feel the same way about cats, and those are socially 'acceptable' indoor animals, haha.

Although my 4-year old could have retrieved the birds for me, at 4, I'm not too interested in having her "help" with processing chickens. It was hard enough corralling my adult helper!

My husband is not a wuss, but a total jerkface when it comes to helping me with anything chicken-related. I should serve him tofu while I make myself MY CHICKENS, as he calls them. Well, technically, he calls them YOUR D*** CHICKENS. I have no idea why he's so hostile to them, but whatever. Tofu might set his head on straight.

All tasks we ask of our kids should be age appropriate, and considerate of the individual. I would expect a 4 year old to manage what my older boys can do now with some experience.

My DH started to enjoy the chickens when he could throw out oats or corn after a long days work. HE has come to really like the birds; and doesn't mind when one is for dinner. DH helps with coop building and the feeding, too. Sorry your DH is a headache. My DH loves all animals so chickens are not too far a reach for him. Hopefully your DH is still young and trainable, lol.

haha, a hemorrhoid. It's so weird, he's usually a decent guy but he's got issues with the chickens. Eh, not worth ditching him over (yet).

My DH used to say he didn't want chicken s--t all over the place, so I just dropped the subject. One day he came home from work talking about a coworker who raised chickens.....hmmm, I said. So he looked at all sorts of things on the internet about coops, feed, etc.....and the next thing I knew he had a plan for a house, runs, etc and was pricing materials. And the rest, as they say, is history. We now have more chickens than we know what to do with, but they are primarily meat birds, so I guess I DO know what to do with them.....LOL

Wonder what his issue is with chickens? Did a rooster get after him when he was a child?

No, I wouldn't ditch him......but tofu parmesan might not be a bad idea......or tofu noodle soup......many possibilities, I would think......

The man can hold a grudge. In the spring, he stopped saying "no" to chickens, but didn't actually say "yes." Apparently he's still butt-hurt about that. Well, dude...I work full-time, bring in 50% of the income, have 50% of say in the house, and the wishy-washy stuff doesn't fly with me. I researched the heck out of everything, learned to use powertools, learned to load wood in my car like a pro, built an awesome, beautiful coop (by myself with no help from him) and got the dang chickens. It's about time to get over it. All summer it was all about how the birds were useless, not producing anything but poop everywhere, giant money drains, etc.... Now, the laying breeds are laying, the meat is in the fridge, he's had to lift nary a finger for any of it. Yeah, typing this out I'm getting seriously annoyed. Hahaha. Tofu parmesan it'll be, for him. Though, dang, that sounds good. I actually like tofu when it's prepared well.

Good to hear about a real woman on here...one that doesn't wait around for the husband to provide a coop for her but gets out there and makes one on her own. Kudos!!!

Shades of Little Red Hen on all that and I am with you all the way. Everyone likes to eat the proceeds but no one wants to help do the work in this family too, when it comes to food production. Funny how that is....

The goal is to NOT prepare it well..... LOL
