I was thinking about that lovely set up using the 2 gal bleach bottles while butchering 2 birds today. -only the super sized cornishx and turkey hen would not fit . . . .I think. I'm keeping an eye out for larger bottles!!

You could always use a 3 gallon, bucket if it was the tall, skinny type. Some frying oils come in larger containers. If need be you could cut the corner out of a pillowcase to shove the bird's head through and hang it by the opposite corner of the case (I would duct tape the bird around the middle once its in the pillow case to minimize wing flapping)

My meaties are here!
Glad they arrived safe and sound.. You aren't too far from me

They fit! Honestly, they do! The ones I did this past summer were live wt. approx. 13-15 lb birds and they fit in the cone. I'm thinking a turkey hen would also. The neat part is that a large part of them hangs out the bottom, while some hangs out the top, but the middle conforms so well to the body that they just cannot move at all. They kick but they cannot launch out of it.

These birds were 10 lb live wt. and they weren't even a tight fit...very comfy. Talk about big feet...CX have huge feet!

I'm currently stuck with a rooster I got attached to. Whyyyyyyyy. Ugh. He's just too darn nice.

I'm bringing him inside at night until 9am. Sleeping in a pet carrier. So far he only crows early in the morning, so when he's outside he's perfectly quiet.

We were about the dispatch him the other day and he looked around and look at me and kind of chirped at me like "What are you going to do?" I looked at my fiance and we're both "Yup, can't do it.." I can kill mean roosters, annoying roosters, deformed roosters... just not perfectly well mannered roosters.

Still trying to find him a home... don't foresee it happening.

If you are planning on taping them around the body, be careful not to do it tight. Birds have a completely different respiratory system than mammals--no diaphragm--so if you hold or wrap their bodies tightly, you can easily suffocate them.

Good point, Glad you caught it! I didn't clarify that very well.. I just meant to tape it enough to prevent the flapping, since the pillow case is soft instead of rigid like a cone.

We are facing the same dilemma... our lead rooster and his 2nd in command are real sweethearts and they are passing that sweetheart trait along! We have 4 of their sons here and every one of them is an awesome young fellow who is people friendly and great about caring for the hens, and even chick friendly with the babies!

It is going to suck when we have to start culling soon.

Sell them! Advertise them as being of good temperament and sell them! Many folks out there looking for a well mannered roo that's a good flock master. I know if I could find a good, young rooster in a breed I like and it had the right look and temperament, I'd pay up to $15 for one.
