Processing Quail Pictures- WARNING Graphic!

I just did 2 and skinned them it was way easier then any chicken I have ever done. Can't wait to try it for dinner! If they are a hit I have okay for even more.

I just went with clean cut and let them bleed out while I was holding them. Honestly it was quite and I really didn't feel horrible doing it because it was over fast.

That is encouraging. I have done Cornish X before but nothing as small as quail yet. I will be doing some soon. I have one rooster that had a bum leg that I will be culling soon. He is about 9.5 oz live weight and I am wondering how that translates to processed weight. He is about 7 weeks old, but struggling to get around (slipped fock?)
 
I finally processed my first 2 quail today. It's a bit different than chickens. I skinned them ans that part was pretty easy. Both of them were roosters and I think I am goiing to start referring to them as Chihuahuas. Their "boy parts" were bigger than any I have seen in chickens! Makes me wonder how there was room for those AND the rest of the intenal organs at the same time.



 
when I was a kid Gramma would hypnotize the chickens before she cut their heads off. They still flopped all over the yard but the breasts always seemed more tasty and we slept better during those Sunday afternoons after a big dinner. More relaxation hormones and fewer panic hormones. I'm sure somebody has explained how to do this somewhere in this forum?
 
Thanks for the info... being new to quail is fascinating. I have just hatched my eggs, the chicks are about a week old already. I cannot wait to see what I have when they mature, I am interested in several and all types...[till I figure out what is best for ME].
learning about processing and brooding and feeds and everything is fascinating.... I truly enjoy your postings and find them most informative...
Again, thanks and keep going, im learning a lot ahead of time for my new found hobby.....

Why take the skin off? I have never processed quail (yet), I am raising up a bunch for meat currently, but all the other poultry I've done, wild or domestic, I leave the skin on. Just wondering if there's something I don't know, any insight would be amazing! Thanks!
 
i have finally finished reading this thread and think the information contained within is invaluable
i will be processing quail very soon
and even though @monarc23 is no longer on BYC she deserves credit for everything she posted and for her other quail threads/articles
