Hi All, CW is a 10 month old pullet olive egger (probably mostly leghorn, Ameraucana, BCM) that has been laying for five months. She is consistent and lays average sized, med to large eggs. She and her sisters have been feather picked around the vent over the past month, so they were separated from the rest of the flock and treated. Yesterday, a prolapsed vent was seen on CW with some pecking damage that seemed pretty mild. We rinsed with dilute chlorhexadine, applied hemorrhoid cream, then reinserted easily with gloves and lube. She was placed in a isolation cage in the run. She looked ok this AM, but by afternoon, she’d laid an egg and prolapsed again. Prolapse looked at least as bad as the day before. We treated the same way and moved to a garage cage so we can restrict light so she’ll stop laying. Checked on her an hour later and she had passed normal poop and prolapsed again. Soaked her in Epsom salt bath (about 2 cups per five gallons?) and reinserted, but it had again mostly prolapsed an hr later (see most recent pic). In addition to restricting light (to 8 hr a day?) we are withholding food for a day, both to help her stop laying and because pooping seems to make her prolapse worse. She has water and was eating well today; she does not act very sick. I’m guessing that she will keep prolapsing until she stops laying, so my question is: should we soak/reinsert with Preparation H just twice a day until then? She is very flighty and handling is quite stressful for her... Thanks for any help!

I’ve never heard of this! I’m commenting so I can see the answers in case I run into this one day 😦 I know you will get lots of good advice. Good luck! I’m sure that is uncomfortable!

Yes, poor girl. She doesn’t seem terribly uncomfortable but she is really missing her flock and is afraid of us, so she is pretty unhappy right now.
