Yesterday I noticed my chicken had a bleeding butt and through the help of some backyard chicken members they helped me to find out it was a prolapse and when I felt it, it seemed there was an egg in there. I gently cleaned it and put some antibiotic cream on it since i didn't have any Prep H around. The problem is the egg didn't come out yet and I don't know how to tell if it is healing or not. The blood seems to have dried but I don't know if thats a good thing. Thank you so much for taking time to help me out.

(there are some pine chips stuck on there as well which I have to clean off)

If the egg is still inside she is egg bound, and you need to get a rubber glove, lubricate a finger, and insert it into the vent, and find out if the egg is there or not. If there is an egg, put her into very warm water up to the bottom of her wings to soak her vent. A calcium tablet or Tums at this time would be needed. If no egg is there, get some honey and put it on the prolapse, and try to push it back inside. This is painful, but needs to be done or the tissue will dry out and die. The prolapse will probably come back out with poops or eggs. Many of these hens will need to be put down. Cover her cage for 16 hours a day to prevent her from laying--this may take 2-3 days. Once the swelling goes down, she can go back to the coop, but may be prone to this again. Here are links for you: http://www.avianweb.com/eggbinding.html
