This is happening right now! I noticed my two year old Easter with a soft shelled egg hanging from her vent ugh. I pulled on it and it came out? So I got my supplies warm water clean towels and rounder her up. Upon inspection there was more egg so I pulled that out. I suppose that was the wrong thing to but I panicked. Her vent is prolapsed. I soak her for as long as I could in a salt bath gave calcium citrate 600 with vit D3 dried her off I tried to manipulate it back in no luck. I’ve been finding eggs with no shells soft shells part hard part soft. They have good layer feed plenty of space oyster shell all that jazz. I should have probably given her the calcium a couple times a week. She is actually acting normal. What is my next step?

How is she doing now?

If the red tissue is still exposed, be sure to coat it with oil, ointment or honey to help keep it from drying out.

You did the right thing by giving the Calcium right away. Give her another tablet once daily for a week.

It went back in on its own. I isolated her over night in the garage. I came out check and this happened. I will give her the calcium as suggested. My husband is getting upset she is in the garage. Ugh I have two 5mo chickens in the garage too. Came I let her out with the other big girls?

What a Sweet Girl!

Yes, if she's eating/drinking and moving about, try putting her back with her flock.
You can go out and check on her of course and pull her aside daily to give the Extra Calcium.
I leave mine with their flock unless they are getting picked at/bullied or if they have prolapsed tissue which can get picked/damaged.
They are happier there even when they don't feel the best.

Hopefully the Extra Calcium will help firm up the shell, help push out any more material (soft shell, etc.), it can also help with retention so it may help avoid prolapsing or at least not quite so badly.

It does look like she expelled more membrane too. Can you tell if she has any albumen (whites) or yolk leaking from the vent? Everything came out intact?
I'd be concerned about infection if there's a chance anything leaked, which looking at that membrane, perhaps it did (?).

IF you think so, then consider giving an antibiotic to help with infection. Amoxicillin is a good choice. If you have any on hand that would be good, if not, you can order it online. Dose is 57mg per pound of weight, given orally twice a day for 7-10 days.

You have two 5mo old in the garage too? Are you quarantining them since they are new, are they sick or?
At that age, you could try to start slowly introducing them unless you are observing a quarantine for some reason. Do you have space to house them next to your existing flock so they can all see one another? Introductions can go all sorts of ways you just never know. I always expect D.R.A.M.A. with mine and I usually get it, but things calm down after a while (a month?). Fun times😂

Sorry my chicks are 5 weeks old. Where do I order the ATB from?
Even at 5 weeks if you have a secure space, they can go outside in warm temps like most of the U.S. is having.
👇 Hyperlink to meds was in previous post. I'll quote it again.

:hugs It's O.K.!!!

Sometimes things just all seem to build up at one time. Give yourself a good cry, then get to work on breaking that darn broody. Oh my, can they be stubborn:hmm If she's not taking the hint by you moving her off the nest and placing her on roosts at night, then put her in a cage, link below to a good method.

Your hen that had the prolapse. Is she doing o.k.? If she is, then put her back with her flock. Pull her aside once a day and give her the extra Calcium. It doesn't matter when you give it to her just as long as she gets it, so you may find it easier to grab her off the roost early in the morning, pop the tablet in, let her swallow, then set her on the floor. OR you can grab her at roosting time. Whatever works for you!

I'm so sorry that things are not going very well, but often things have a way of working out o.k.

Dear Wyorp Rock. I am contacting once more for advise. My Lana the one with the egg problems made a great recovery for a few days and is now not doing so well. She drinks but barley eats. All the signs of chickens not feeling well. Three days ago she had a soft shelled egg that was smashed in the nesting box. I have been giving the calcium every other day. Shortly after I saw her leaving the nesting box she starting showing signs of no felling well. No vets can see her. I did take a fecal sample to my local vet who agreed to send it to the lab. No parasites found. I did order the fish mox but order 250 mg. She is about 4 pounds from my mini scale. I have everything I can think of she might eat with no luck. Nutadrench in water. She does go out with her flock mates for a couple of hours otherwise she is in the garage. Do you think I should give her the 250mg fish mox. and continue the calcium. I'm kinda desperate on what to do.

I'm sorry she's not feeling well again.

I'd give the Calcium every day for a week.

You can try the antibiotic and see if it helps. If she's 4lbs the dose for Amoxicillin would be 228mg. There's wiggle room in the dosing, so I'd just give her 250mg twice a day for 7-10 days.

It may be that she has a shell gland problem or some other reproductive difficulty - it's so hard to know, but sometimes soft shelled eggs can become a chronic problem and about the only thing you can do is manage symptoms the best you can. Giving extra Calcium when needed and if she's acting all hunched up and sick, try an antibiotic and see how it goes.
