So, one of my chickens had prolapsed oviduct. I separated her from the flock for a week, pushed it back in when necessary, gave her very little food, and plenty of water (with apple cider vinegar). It seemed fine so she went back w/ the flock. Now, I separated her because a around 1" by 2" section is coming out about 1". She seems to be trying to lay an egg! The weird thing is that whenever I pick her up, the whole section goes back in. What to do??!!

Thanks!

She can be egg bound at the same time when she has a prolapse--in fact can be a possible cause. Hens also will continue to lay after having a prolapse. I would give her a dose of calcium (a tums or calcium tablet) and you can soak her in warm shallow water to get her to pass the egg (if she is eggbound.) Apply honey, sugar, or Preparation H to her prolapse to shrink it. Separation is important because they will peck at her prolapse since it is red, and she can be severely injured until the prolapse heals. Keeping the area clean is good, and placing her in a dark room or covering her cage for 16 out of every 24 hours will eventually stop her from laying. Once the prolapse heals, she can start laying or a vet can give her medicine to prevent laying. Here are some links to read:
