Me again with a never ending issue with Stan the disabled Pekin! His penis came out and stayed out. It happened once and went in on its own after about 10/15 min. Today it was an hour so I had to take matters into my own hands. You should have seen the door dash order- KY jelly, saline spray, gloves…. Anyway, i got it back in. The tissue was white and healthy, no redness or swelling which is why im here. Why has this happened and how can I prevent it? Is this normal sometimes? This has never happened before. A few changes to his lifestyle; we have two mature female khaki Campbell ducks that live with him now. He tries to mate with them but cant because of his leg. He usually ends up going at them from the side. Both times the prolapse occurred it was after swimming. He’s on meloxicam and tramadol for his leg, long term, and not sure if these cause issue with toooo relaxed muscles? Because meloxicam reduces swelling. We go away for the weekend and I’m not really sure the pet sitter is equipped to both notice, or fix it if it happens again. I know when it does time is of the essence.

Long story short- tell me if this happens sometimes or not; and if not, is the only way to fix it going to get it amputated or stitched in?

Is it staying in?
So far that evening it did, so we left for our trip- several hours after the incident and I checked him 3 separate times to make sure because I’m paranoid and super neurotic about him in particular. The pet sitter hasn’t seen / said anything and I am not noticing it on camera; so tentatively thinking we are good. Just not sure why it’s happened… thought we’d have less reproductive health issues with boys but apparently not so.. ha!

Is it staying in?
So it was in all weekend no problems. I had them for a swim today; and it’s out again. Not exactly sure why this is an issue with the water but also kind of exhausted at this point.. here’s a photo.

Is he breeding any females? Or showing any breeding behavior? Sometimes when they have done the deed, the penis takes a minute to go back in. Some ducks take longer. If it's happening in the water, it sounds like he may be engaging in activities. But if you don't see any mounting or breeding, I'm not sure why it would come out.

Oh he is- he has a bad leg so he can’t fully mount them, but he definitely tries. He also does this sometimes on land and it doesn’t do this, not sure why the water is the common denominator, but how long is too long for it to be out? When it happened on Thursday, I waited an hour before intervening. Today he’s secluded on clean blankets to see how long, if at all, it takes to go back in but I was planning on intervening again if it didn’t go back in an hour…

Edited to add- from 2-3:10 it didn’t go back on its own so I did intervene and put it back manually. Will be checking to see if it stays in, later. If not, I guess we repeat process and call the vet? Not even sure what they’d do as I’d really prefer not to have any surgery unless it’s got an issue (like infection or inflammation). All I see is healthy tissue

A vet can put a stitch or 2 to keep it in. You need to remove him from the ladies as long as he tries it’s going to keep coming out with out giving it time to recover from the prolapse. Do you have any hydrocortozone ointment it is suppose to help with swelling so you can get it back in.

I don’t have that but saline and KY seem to have done the trick to get it back in and it’s stayed in- the weird thing is it doesn’t seem swollen just doesn’t go back inside once it’s out. He swam with the girls one more time and it did the same thing, I got it back in and then the next day rearranged their swim time. So Stan goes by himself, then the girls, then Heimlich (Heimlich and Stan, both boys, can’t go together because a Heimlich is twice Stan’s size and tries to hurt him). It’s a lot of work but he hasn’t had a prolapse since. The issue like you said must have been because of the girls.
