Just a quick note to let you all know Matilda is still alive and well! She has yet to lay an egg but so far so good

Latest update....

Matilda is still alive and fighting. It looks as though she has laid her first egg since all the problems but it was another big one! Poor girl her colour has gone pale, and she doesnt seem as active so I am guessing its made her a bit sore. But she is still eating and moving, although a bit slower than usual. She doesnt seem in pain so for now we are going to just keep an eye on her.

poor little girl! i guess the tissues may be tight since it started, maybe giving her some extra calcium would help?

Sad news......we never found out if Matilda did lay that last big egg....but either way since then she had become slower and less stubborn as the days went on....she passed away tonight but not in any obvious pain.

At least we gave her a chance.....RIP Matilda xxxx

I am so sorry!! You gave her a very special life- always remember that- i do bird rescue and something that is so important to remember is to respect them and give them every chance you can- you did exactly that- she was a lucky girl to have you.

sometimes we keep going over and over what if scenarios- but remember you gave her every chance and she lived longer than she would have...

So sorry to hear about all the problems and loos of your lovely hen.
We lost our Hen Elly after she prolapsed. It is so sad when it happens. We don;t know what happened or why. One night I went into the coop and there she was covered in blood and it was up the walls and everywhere. It was not nice. We really tried but didn;t know about the honey at the time. I do know the other girls had gotten to her before me so they did more damage. We put the prolapse back in gently and shut her in the dark over night but in the morning it was out again and swollen and green and smelly. We kind of knew she was gone then really. We took her to our vet who put her down. I couldn;t bring myself to do anything else to hurt her. She was a lovely girl and we were very upset to lose her that way. We vowed that we would always cull if it happened again - but after reading about honey we might try? Thankfully it hasn;t happened again yet? I did hear it was more common in free range birds.

I know this is an old link, but thank you. We are hundreds of miles away from home and got a call from our friends that our Runner Duck has a prolapse. They took her to their house to care for her. I'm hoping for the best, but who knows. Any new suggestions are appreciated. They are reading, and watching videos to make sure they do the right thing. They said she had about 6 in. out and the other ducks were picking on her. They found the egg she laid and it was bloody. I know they are doing all they can for her. She was given to us, so we can only estimate her age at about 3 yr. old. None of the ducks have been laying very good this spring.
