My one year old Olive Egger laid an egg a few days ago that was coated in blood, and ever since has had a piece of tissue that pokes out of her vent intermittently. She is acting normally and has enough butt fluff that the other chickens have left it alone. She has laid at least two eggs since, one with a minimal amount of blood and the next with no blood at all. Her poop has been runny but it is also hot here, so she has been drinking a fair amount.

So far we have tried to clean the area, but we really don't want to make it worse on accident (I tugged it a little before I realized what it was, which I'm worried prevented healing). I am not opposed to taking her to the vet, but it would probably be scheduled 1 week or more away.

Welcome To BYC

Is poop coming from that small protrusion?

It's good that she has been able to lay an egg.

I would apply warm compresses soaked in epsom salts or if you wish you can place her in an epsom salts bath. Since it's hot where you are, keep the bath water on the cool/room temperature side.

Apply an anti-inflammatory cream to the protrusion.

I'd also get 1 Calcium Citrate+D3 tablet into her once daily for a week. Just pull down on the wattles, pop the tablet into the beak and let her swallow. This extra Calcium is quicker uptake and give for a short period of time when in crisis and is to build up reserves and help with retention.

Watch that she's drinking well and staying hydrated.
