I have a hen that recently got snatched by my dog, I was able to save her and her small cuts healed up great, but now two weeks later she seems like she’s trying to poop/lay an egg. She’s also been laying around a lot. she still comes and eat when I bring food, and she comes running fast for the meal worms. I have her in a bath right now, and she pooped right away. Also right before I gave her a bath I did finally find one of her eggs that she must have layed within the hour. I have not seen her drink much, and she does seem to have a slight lice problem. Any recommendations? Should I just put some hemroid cream on her and let her rest?

Hi @Lyndseyft13 Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry to hear about your hen.
Where were the injuries from the dog - did it get her on the behind?

Is she pooping, what does that look like?
You mention putting on hemorrhoid cream, is the vent swollen or prolapsed?

She laid an egg after you gave her a soak-was her egg normal?

It's hard to know with chickens, but if they are having trouble laying eggs, that can make them droopy. Try to get her hydrated, give her some extra vitamins and calcium for a couple of days. Check to make sure her crop is emptying and if you are seeing lice, treat her with a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust.

Look forward to more information and any photos you would like to share. Keep us posted.

I was worried about her crop because it was pretty big last night, but it completely emptied this morning to where I can’t even feel it. Her poops look normal to me. She layed her egg before I bathed her, and no egg while I did. Her egg seemed normal. The only egg I found not normal was a powdery white one but is small than the one my Clare lays.
The vent isn’t prolapsed looking, it just looks like she’s constantly trying to poop. I’ll be getting on the live stuff right away.

She doesn’t want me by her but because last nice I was picking of the lice eggs and that bothered here, so I can’t get a good picture of her vent.

Also, it was her back and butt where he bit her. The wound on the butt wound was the size a little smaller than a dime and the one on her back the size of a nickel. I also just watched her drink some water so that’s a good sign I hope. Although she seems very tired, she is closing her eyes quite a bit. Should I check inside her to see if I feel an egg?

Is her abdomen swollen?

If she is pooping then she doesn't have an egg stuck low enough to cause a blockage.
The area belOw her vent does seem a little swollen to me. Today I put her back outside because the weather is great and she seemed a lot better after a bath. Below her vent I found a lot of lice eggs and so I have given her lice treatment. But today when I brought her out she layed an egg and seemed to really perk up. She spent the day foraging, which she loves a lot. Which is why it was weird that she was sitting In the coop a lot. But I think it may be the lice that was causing the issue here. I guess I was extra worried for her because she had recently gotten bitten.

She may have been having a bit of trouble laying her egg. If she is carrying a little extra fat or even if the area below the vent (abdomen-between her legs) this can make it more difficult to lay.

It's good that she perked up after she laid her egg today. If you don't already, then offer oyster shell free choice for extra calcium and watch to see if she is drinking. Some hens do not drink enough, so dehydration can cause some egg laying issues too.

Parasites (mites/lice/worms) can definitely make a hen feel sick, so getting those taken care is important.

I'm glad she is doing better.
I don't think we can over worry-you know your girls and her behavior was off, a very good catch!

I’ve been using the DE dust for them but it wasn’t enough. She has been drinking. I will definitely get on getting her some shells. She is kinda a big girl so I should probably ease on the feeding haha. I’m so thankful for all the help!
