Please help! My 5 year old free range girl was found to have prolapsed vent and putrid/rotten (not fishy) watery excrement x 1day. Yesterday morning I noticed this very foul odor in her night coop and later in the day I realized her "messy" rear-end with yellow discharge. The prolapsed vent is inflamed with a yellow discoloration -- which does not wipe off. She's separated now and drinking electrolyte water with lemon. She's alert and yesterday evening ate mealworms and yogurt, but so far, drinking but not eating this morning. My other 2 hens do not appear ill. I suspect vent gleet, but the odor is not fishy. I've read posts about treating with flagyl and penicillin for vent gleet, but some posters say no to antibiotics. Yesterday I soaked her in warm water and applied topical clotrimazole to the vent. Would oral clotrimazole or diflucan be better? Could the rotten, non-fishy odor be from vent gleet? It sure smells anaerobic (bacterial). Also, she has a 2inch round depressed area below the vent which has no feathers. This area is midline, not inflamed and perfectly round...any ideas on this? I plan to get a wormer today and continue with current treatment. Also, I'm feeding her eggs, extra calcium, yogurt, and fluids. Please advise me on additional treatments. I live in an area without good avian vet care. I appreciate any input here.

I did not get a pic of her rear today. Midday I gave her a warm soak and dozens of white 1/2inch worms seemed to come from her but and were seen swimming in the water. I know -- disgusting. There were also numerous smaller 1/4 inch white swimmers. I suspect they are maggots. After 20minute soak, I think I may have washed away most of them. Her vent was still prolapsed at that time and developed a gray exudate that was difficult to debride. I feel like she may have flystrike, so I gave her flagyl and penicillin. This evening the odor was better, her vent is no longer protruding and I see no parasites. She did not eat today and I'm concerned she may have necrotic tissue on her vent although it is no longer protruding and visible. Tomorrow I'll get whatever pics of her rear that I can get. She's in the hen crate hospital tonite. I'm still applying topical clotrimazole. Thank you for the interest. I'll give follow up tomorrow. Easter prayers for my girl.

You were correct to give the penicillin. She is your girl and not a production bird.

She has probably had the VG for some time.

I think you should take her to an avian vet if you can afford it. If she has prolapse and necrosis she needs to be debrided.

She will need antibiotics for 5 days.

Don’t just feed her protein. (Meal worms) It will affect her other organs. Give her some electrolytes to drink, free feed pellets. And do sitzbaths (warm water/epsom salts (small amount) once or twice a day, dry thoroughly (Pat dry) and clip all feathers around the vent.

This is not medical advice and I am not a veterinarian or licensed to diagnose animals. If you use my ideas it is at your own risk. Advise is based on my own experiences with my own livestock.
