Prolapsed vent

Thanks for the support everyone, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I don’t think she had enough fight in her. I decided to give her a break from the “pushing back in” until the swelling went down more. Yesterday I soaked her and dried her off, gave her lots of support with water, etc. but she just seemed completely exhausted. She no longer tried to stand up or move around and seemed to be uncomfortable and I’m afraid she was suffering. So with a heavy heart, we decided to euthanize with the dry ice method. It was quick and I feel like we did the right thing. Our chickens have been more like pets than farm animals, so this was a hard decision. Thanks again for all the support and advice, it was deeply appreciated.
I'm sorry for your loss:hugs
I know you did everything you could for her. I'm sure she was much loved! At 11yrs old she lived a good long life.

While I’m here, let me ask you what you think about a flock of one? The largest our flock ever was is eight, and we lost the last three of our older flock this year (they were 12 years old!) We have just one remaining 11 year old hen now, and I would consider finding another home for her if she’s going to be distressed to be without a flock. She seems to be doing fine so far, but I’d be curious what you all think.

Do you plan on having any more chickens once she is gone? If you do plan on more, then you may want to get 2-3 chicks or juveniles to add, youngsters would probably be the easiest to integrate with her.

If you are not planning on getting any more, then she would probably do best by herself instead of trying to re-home her. My reasoning is mainly based on her age. Stress in a move would be hard on her. She is older so integrating her with another flock would also be stressful and she may not be accepted.

A lot of people do keep a single chicken, but you would need to spend a little more time with her. If you have cold winters, she may need extra bedding, checking up on, etc.

Just my thoughts. Hopefully others will chime in.

We don’t plan on getting more chickens at this time, maybe again someday. It sure has been a great experience, we’ve loved these girls, it’s been so nice to have them around.
That is just what I was thinking, too stressful for her to integrate into a new flock.
