Prong Collar?! Tell Me About Them.

I am getting a husky. I have been thinking of a harness because they are pullers. :D

Be careful of a harness too. They are safe to use but if you get the wrong kind, you just give your dog more strength behind their pull. I have a 10 month old weimaraner puppy and we use a Gentle Harness with him. It pulls tight and down if he tries to pull us forward. He doesn't like that sensation so he stops pulling. But nothing beats proper training!

I have seen prong collars used on big, strong dogs. Dobermans, Rottweilers. And also on dogs with very thick fur, like German Shepherds and Huskies.

When the dog is not pulling, the collar should be hanging loosely on its neck. I used one briefly on my second Doberman when training her to walk on a leash. She pulled hard enough to yelp, one time. After that, she figured out if she didn't pull, it didn't poke.

I will get a Gentle Harness now, thank you. I was just planning on getting a harness that is not too tight so that it does not chafe on her body and damage her fur and skin but that is all that I thought of there. :D

There are options like gentle leaders which are a head harness and the haltsi (sp) also a head harness

My understanding of a prong collar is if they pull the collar pinches them.

My old neighbors raised german Shepards and used them while training. I have zero direct experience.

I think of them like any other training device. Understand how they work, learn how to use them properly and the results can be really good.

We use prong, or pinch collars on our Australian cattle dogs/Red heelers. They are powerful animals and can be challenging to train.

We bought prong collars to teach them manners such as not pulling. Both DH and I are a bit long in the tooth and I have neck, shoulder and spine problems so I do not need dragged around like a dog sled by one of our young dogs seeing a squirrel and charging after it.

IMHO prong collars are more humane and effective than choke collars. I almost lost two dogs years ago when they tangled leashes in their choke collars and almost asphyxiated themselves. I'll never put a choke collar on one of my dogs again.

The Red Heelers only wear the prong collars when they are on leash and each collar has rubber tips on them. The instructions plainly tell you to fit the collar so that it rides just under the dogs jawline and the prongs fit so that when there is pressure put on them, the trachea is clear of any 'pinching'.

Used in a responsible manner by loving owners, a prong collar is a useful and effective training tool when training a headstrong dog. I agree, there are many great videos on youtube that will explain how to use one in training a dog to walk on leash so you maintain control.
