We call them Leggerns in Southern W V . I added a Legbar rooster in a small flock of brown leghorns so I'll get white, green or blue eggsDo you say
a) Leg-horn or
b) Leggern?
Does pronunciation vary by geographic region?
Oh! That makes so much sense. I never connected the dots that the "leggern" pronunciation is due to a difference in pronunciation between English and the language native to the country of origin. It just also happens to sound like the way certain American dialects sometimes drop sounds. Learning something new every day.It is like Chianina cattle - not pronounced in English like it is spelled in English because it is based on Italian. For the leghorn especially, the Italian roots came across unevenly as far as spelling vs pronouncing go.
