Prospective Newb with lots of questions

I am contemplating to build a coop and get a few chickens.

For various reasons I am hesitant to pull the trigger, so to speak.

Living in Alabama, Suburbia (but a rural town)
I have had dogs, got cats and pet birds (Avatar).

My favorite 'fairytale' book to read is John Seymour's The Self Sufficient Life.
