At My Desk!
One of my Madagascar hens lost her legs from frostbite over the winter. One leg is missing from about halfway from the foot to the hock and the other is missing the entire foot. She had been getting around just fine on her hocks but I decided to see if I could give her a more normal life. She is wearing her prosthetics tonight and is using them! I do not have the feet on them yet either. She is now walking upright which she had been unable to do for about 6 months. She seems much happier already. I am going to get some photos of her soon. With and without her prosthetics.

That is so cool! Good for you. I bet it makes getting around easier on her.

I'm interested!
I have a showgirl who broke her leg as a chick. I took her to the vet and they suggested I just leave it alone even though I wanted to amputate. Now that she's grown I really wish I would have gotten rid of the leg. She cant use it and her toes get caught on things. The other hens step on it and all she does is hide under the feeder because she freaks out when it snagsor gets stepped on. If there was a prosthetic leg for her, id take her back to the vet and ask em to take it off.

I have a Sebright that lost both of his legs due to frost bite this past winter. Can you tell me more about the prosthetics? Did you make it your self or did you buy them? Please respond ASAP. Thank you

Could you please provide us more info on the prosthetics?

I have a pet that hast lost one half of his leg and his other leg is not looking like it is going to make it either. Normally I would put the chicken down, but this little guy is my kids' pet, not suffering, still happy and eating (getting fat in fact) and does not seem to have pain. If there is any way to make prosthetics that work for him, I would really like to do so.

@Redcatcher I know this is an old post but I am curious on follow up. Did she continue to do great with the prosthetics? Where or how did you get them made? I see a few other folks had the same issue I have right now with one young hen who due to frost bite is losing her lower legs, I can see that they are died off and she is getting around on her hocks but I know this really doesn't get her opportunity to get her lower half off the ground much and worried about the rest of the hock getting nasty or getting belly burn or some other issue from not getting up off the ground more... Ground meaning bedding at the moment she is in a dog kennel in the basement to protect her from the other birds or predators and make sure she is getting enough food/water. Prosthetics for chickens anyone?

I have a chicken who just lost her feet to frostbite. I saw that they made plastics duck boots that snap over leg and feet, but can no longer find the site. I am going to order some duck feet finger puppets from ebay for $5.00 to see if they will slip on her legs with some vet bandages. Any info would be appreciated. These feet look like silicone and fit over fingers, so I thought they might fit. Called duck feet puppet.
