Hello,

I have a couple of Lakenvelder roos that have some frostbite on their combs. Not a lot just on a tip of their comb. I have already read that there is not much that can be done for that and that the tips that have basically died will not come back or anything. I also read that puting the antibotic ointment is my best bet for infections.

These are two stubborn birds and like to stay out of the coop much longer than I would like. I live in mid-Michigan and out winters have been cold. Is there anything I can put on the combs to keep them soft and to keep them from cracking? I noticed that some of my hens have a white ashy look to their combs. I have a heat lamp in my coop but my chickens are allowed outside during the day when its not as cold.

Suggestions please!

Thanks in advance...

I've read on a few breeders sites that you can put vaseline on their combs to help protect them from frostbite.

I like your sig. The fluffier they are the funnier it gets. I've got a cochin rooster and when he comes running for a treat... oh. my. gosh. it's funny!

anything petroleum based will work. it is just a matter of having the bird under control to do it. one of my young boys is good about letting me do it to him, the other puts up a stink. i found that the hens will sometimes need it too if they have divided points on their combs too. my banty favs have not had any issues but my banty cochin had a little hit one of her comb points and it killed the point back, now the comb looks funny since it was one of her middle points.

Bag Balm! I keep some in the house at all times. I have other pets that need it occasionally. Now to just catch them all...

As for my roos they went at pretty young and managed to mangle each others combs pretty good already. I don't think they can look any worse (knock on wood).

I guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow.

Thanks again guys!

Bag Balm, Vaseline, or even Vicks.....I use them all, warm it up and just slather it on with your fingers, the Vicks or mentholated rubs, are good to keep others from picking, they don't like the smell;) Have a goodun!!
