"Protein content should not exceed 19% as too much protein is linked to large combs, A little grain (scratch/wheat) may be feed twice a week. Too much grain will cause your serama to be fat and sluggish. Serama hens are great moms, laying, hatching and taking care of their own chicksrain (red wheat) may be feed weekly as a treat. SERAMA make great moms, laying, hatching, taking care of their own chicks." I got an oops serama egg AND IT HATCHED so was researching and wondered if this is true about protein and comb size? or is it a serama thang!? so cute😍

I don't know where you found that "jewel" but in my opinion, it is bogus. If I happen to be brooding chicks with poults, the chicks get the same high protein (28%) that the poults get. I have seen no evidence that the higher protein has affected the comb size of any of my chickens.

I consider 19% protein or lower to be poor quality chick starter. When I do brood chicks on their own I use a good quality chick starter that has 23% protein.

My disclaimer is that I don't raise Seramas.

seems like higher protein good but ya got to wonder if theres anything too it. idk just wondered..not that im anti comb! I found it crazy that my hens dropped egg product after switching feed for two days! like a 2% drop in protein was all it took😮touchy birds indeed
