Hey
Is 16% protein in lay pellets fed to silkies fine(they are pets)?
Some lady told me its not
Is it?

It's on the low side. I mix my layer with gamebird or flock raiser which has 20% protien and have oyster shell free choice on the side.

Total side point: layer pellets are not ok for chicks, ever.

Anywhere from 14-17% is a suitable protein percentage mixture for standard laying hens, so I'm sure your silkies will be fine with the 16% as that is what most all layer feed/pellets contains.

You can always supplement protein if you feel it is not enough for them.

I just got back from an avian vet yesterday. I have a bird sick with Egg Yolk Peritonitis. My bird is emaciated. I asked if feed with 16% protein is high enough. She said that is plenty of protein.

Like ella said 16% protien is on the low side but you should be fine with them being pet and not for show..
