protien in feed

Is your gamebird scratch also 30% protein?

The gamebird is the 30%. The organic is 20%. They get maybe a cup of the organic spread out in the coop a day for them to pick at.

Fish meal, soybean meal, alfalfa...

Why are you interested in upping the protein though?

Extra protein is not a magic bullet. A hen will only lay to her potential and that decreases as she ages. Feeding extra protein is not going to change that.

Mac's comment is quite appropriate.

In my experience, those that found a dramatic improvement in production with a change in rations containing higher Crude Protein were actually limiting feed intake in some manner. This resulted in a decreased daily Amino Acid intake which limited egg production.

Here is what happens. A flock owner feeds a 16% CP layer ration along with .1 lb scratch and kitchen waste. The actual intake of the layer ration was onlyh .2 lb per hen per day which is only 14 g of Crude Protein per day. When the birds changed to a 20% CP ration nothing else changed and egg production increased. The reason for the increased egg production was not due to the new ration being magic, rather it was due to the increased Crude Protein intake to 18 grams per day.

Unfortunately when people rave aobut the increased production when they increase the crude protein in the ration we rarely get the whole story.
