Hi all,

I am new here but have had chickens and ducks for about a year now. We just moved and I built my chickens a big run to go out in. Unfortunately one of my chickens must have flown out and a dog attacked. Her wing is broken and the bone is protruding out under her wing :( this happen a day ago. I brought her inside and she's in the basement where it's quiet in a dog kennel with water. I wrapped her wing up so it's up against her body. She is eating and drinking. When I first found her I gave her a dose of penicillin. What else can I do? Is it cruel to keep her alive or is there anyway this can heal?

I personally would cull or find a vet. A protruding bone would be extremely painful and I don't think will heal without intervention.

I contacted a vet and sent pictures. She said it's going to be hard to keep infection away but said to keep dosing her .1 mg per pound of penicillin for 3-4 days, wrap the wing up against her body and just wait and see if she keeps trying to eat or not. I caught it right after it happened and cleaned it so fingers crossed maybe we got it early enough... I forgot to ask my vet and she is closed to today but thoughts on baby aspirin for pain..? I know it can affect blood clotting so I was hesitant to give her any but I know she has to be in pain.

Poor Speckles :(

I was just reading about this on The Chicken Chick website. Mix 5 - 325 mg. aspirin to a gallon of water. I suppose you could mix it up and just let her drink it like usual or mix it up and give some to her in a syringe or eye dropper.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you! I will this so see if it brings her some comfort. She's still eating/drinking and the wound is starting to scrap up but the bone is still out.. I read this happened with someone else and it actually healed up around the bone. I figured as long as she is fighting and acting like she wants to live then I'll keep trying!

How big is the hole around the bone? How loose is it? Can you move it with your hands? If you can line it back up and re-set it using a splint, then tape it against the body, and keep doing antibiotics it should heal. Try to get that bone back inside where it belongs. Gently.

I am assuming you can't see the vet at all? If you can, get some metacam from her for pain and have her re-align the bone for you.

I do think trying to reduce the fracture and getting the bone back inside is the way to go. It seems to me that the possibility of a bone infection occurring by leaving the broken end exposed would be a very bad thing.

I'm so sorry this happened.
